Caption contest: This Etch A Sketch looks like a book
November 23rd, 2009 by Andreas
I blogged last week about how I was going to try out the Amazon Kindle and see if I'm ready to make the jump from paper to plastic.
Like I said, this is something I've been considering for months. I've read a lot of reviews and most of them say something along the lines of "it feels just like reading a regular book" and "you forget right away that you're reading a screen."
After trying the Kindle out for about a week, I've got to say that it feels just like reading a regular book. You forget right away that you're reading a screen.
The only thing I don't like so far is the "blink" when you flip the page. I know that eventually, I will probably get used to that as well. For now, though, it's not quite doing it for me.
The blink takes me out of the reading experience. The book I'm reading — Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol" — flows well and is easy to get submersed in, just like everything else Brown writes. But every time I turn a page, I'm reminded that I'm reading a book. For a second, I come up to the surface. Then, after half a sentence or so, I'm submersed again.
As a side note, I have similar feelings about some tools used in movie making. Every time I see extensive zooming or panning, or whenever I hear a voiceover narrative, I'm reminded that I'm watching a movie and it briefly takes me out of the experience.
Back to the Kindle. Like I said, the only thing I don't like is the blink. Everything else, I absolutely love.
And it turns out this device probably won't kill our daughters' interest in books either. When I showed it to our oldest, she asked if she could hold it. Without any instructions, she placed her right thumb on the next-page button, stared at the screen for a while and then flipped the page.
That was a reassuring moment for me and it was also something I captured with my iPhone camera for this week's caption contest.
What's our girl saying in the photo? Post your suggestions below before tomorrow Tuesday at 9 p.m. You can post as many as you want. Check back on Wednesday to find out who won.
