Kids explain what Thanksgiving is all about
November 24th, 2009 by ZeeKids really do say the darndest — and cutest — things.
The other week I met with a group of GT (gifted and talented) first-graders at Mililani Mauka Elementary School and they shared with me their version of Thanksgiving’s history and customs. They were just too adorable. Who knew that South America and kalua pork play a part in this holiday?
The story is in today’s Island Life section.
Since we’re on the subject of Thanksgiving and school kids, just thought I’d share the lyrics to a song called “We Are Thankful,” written by local school teacher Jennifer Fixman.
Fixman, also affectionately known as "Miss Jenny," is the founder and president of a company called Edutunes. She’s a teacher, children's song-writer and national teaching consultant who has created more than 200 educational songs.
"We Are Thankful” is part of her "Make a Difference" CD-book set, now available in stores on all islands and at Edutunes.com. For details, visit the site or call Fixman at 728-8863.
“We Are Thankful”
We are thankful for so many things
And this is why we say
A very special thank you
Each and every day
For our moms and dads and sisters,
For our brothers, cousins, friends,
For our grandmas, grandpas, uncles, aunts,
The list never ends,
For our teachers and for books
That we can learn to read,
For the sun, the earth, all animals,
The flowers and the trees
We are thankful for so many things
And this is why we say
A very special thank you
Each and every day!
